I found a drawing I made For my kindergarten teacher when i was 5 years old.
Along with the drawing, it had the set up for a joke.
But it didn't have a punch line, because I was too young to write jokes.
I gave it to my teacher and she criticized it a lot
She said it needed a punch line, that it wasn’t complete and she gave it back to me.
I was heartbroken. It was a gift.

I opened my mouth to apologize, but the apology didn’t stop.
It spilled sideways, backward, upward—forking into sixteen tongues, each fluent in a dialect I didn’t know I knew.
One tongue licked a stranger’s ear across the street.
Another whispered ancient regrets into my father’s auditory memory slot
The rest told stories that hadn’t happened yet.
People began to gather, not to listen, but to submit.
I was fluent in everything. Except silence, but I can taste tomorrow.
I AM BECOME TONGUES.
